"Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered." (Proverbs 21:13, English Standard Version). This verse guides us through a principle fundamental to Christianity - acknowledging and aiding the needy in our midst.

The parable of the Good Samaritan demonstrates the Christlike love we must extend to those less fortunate. The Samaritan did not ignore the wounded man but took care of his needs, offering kindness and compassion. Truly, he embodied the teachings of Jesus.

In today's world, however, we often overlook the needy. A concerning narrative has formed particularly in political spheres, labelling the less fortunate as lazy or work-shy, even if they suffer from physical or mental health issues.

Our current government has been quick to vilify those unable to work due to health reasons. This is not only unkind but deeply concerning. It is essential that we, as followers of Christ, do not fall into the trap of such damning narratives. Instead, we must use our political power and our voices to stand up for justice, echoing the teachings of the Bible and the Westminster Confession.

The verse from Proverbs teaches us to lean into empathy and understanding. We should not close our ears to the cries of the poor but listen and respond with kindness. Our actions can shape our destinies - if we ignore the pleas of the needy, we may find ourselves voiceless in our time of need.

As we move forward, let's take a moment to pray. "Lord, open our hearts to those in need. May we not turn a blind eye, but extend our hand in love and kindness, just as the Good Samaritan did. Amen."
